On August 4th, 2021, The Dixie Fire consumed the historic gold rush town of Greenville. Immediately, there was an outpouring of support from people and businesses around the county. We, the Board of Genesee Retreat, a local 501 c3 that has been serving Indian Valley for several years, realized that we were in a position to pivot in a way that could harness, focus and hopefully sustain that goodwill. Today we are Plumas Strong; our primary directive: support the families of Greenville.

Our Community. Our Responsibility.

Ryan Schramel

Ryan Schramel, the current Chair of Plumas Strong, was raised in Indian Valley. He graduated from Greenville High School in 1999 and then attended Saint Mary's College of California. After completing college, motivated by the events of September 11th, he accepted a commission as an Infantryman in the United States Marine Corps (USMC). After approximately ten years of service, Ryan left the active-duty component. His tours included: two deployments to Ar-Ramadi, Iraq, one to Helmand, Afghanistan, and one to Southeast Asia. His awards include a Meritorious Service Medal, a Bronze Star with Combat Distinguishing Device, and three Navy Commendation Medals (two with Combat Distinguishing Devices). Ryan left the USMC to take a teaching job alongside his lifelong mentor Susan Weber as an educator in his home community of Indian Valley. He holds a single-subject social studies credential and teaches (and administrates) at Indian Valley Academy. Ryan is married to his high school sweetheart Emilee. Together they are raising their three daughters and son in Taylorsville, Ca.
